From red panels to earth-toned metal shingles, your new roof can be customized to your taste. Here's an overview of the main styles and materials used for residential metal roofing.

There are a handful of metals that are used in metal roofing systems. Each has its own pros and cons.
Aluminum:
Aluminum is a popular material for roofs. It’s lightweight and durable and it can be used for standing seam, shingle, tile, and slate profile roofs. Aluminum will never rust which gives it a very long life. It is more expensive than steel, however, and it can be damaged by hail.
Galvalume steel:
Galvalume steel is another option. This carbon/iron steel is coated with zinc and aluminum. Galvalume is resistant to corrosion and it’s fairly affordable. It’s usually only available as shingles or standing seam.
Galvanized steel:
A very popular choice for metal roofs in Ohio. Most commercial metal roofs are made from galvanized steel. It comes in most roofing profiles like standing seam and shingles. It’s also very strong and costs less than most other metal options. The downside is it has a shorter lifespan than other metals.
Aside from these three popular options, there are a few other materials to consider. Copper is considered the most beautiful metal roof, but it’s the most expensive. It can be used as accents over bay windows and dormers, however. Over time, copper develops a beautiful blue-green patina. It can also last up to 100 years or longer. There are also exotic materials like stainless steel and terne-coated stainless.

Shakes have a higher profile than shingles with more texture. This means metal shakes can sometimes be installed over an existing roof like thin wood shingles. With the slate profile, you can choose flat, diamond, or scalloped tiles
Standing seam metal roofs:
Standing seam metal roofs are the most common. This type of system is popular with residential and commercial buildings. Standing seam creates a distinctive look that can work with most home styles.

Metal Roof Repair

If you choose to do this, make sure you only work with reliable metal roofing companies. The quality of the existing roof determines the longevity of the new roof. It is not always a good idea to install metal over shingles, either. Installing a new roof on an existing roof can hide any defects that may cause problems later.
Keep in mind this can only be done if the local building authority allows this type of installation. Most building code prohibits installing more than 2 layers of roofing material. The plywood under your shingles must also be in good condition with no soft spots.
Is a metal roof more expensive than a normal roof?
